Whether it will rain in the next two hours will be forecasted in advance by using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The weather forecasting AI system is called ‘Nowcasting System’. The AI system has learned to find the traditional characteristics of rain by analyzing the radar map of the United Kingdom from 2016 to 2018. Since 2019, 50 experts from the Meteorological Office have verified its effectiveness on radar maps. In 89 percent of the cases, the AI system has been able to give accurate forecasts.
Researchers from Google-owned London AI Lab Deepmind, the University of Exeter and the Meteorological Office, a government agency for weather research in the UK, have teamed up to study the use of AI to predict the weather, the BBC reported.
“Better weather forecasts in the short term will help keep people safe,” said Niall Robinson, head of partnership and product innovation at the Meteorological Office.
